Education
One of the assumptions about gays is that they have a higher education than their straight peers. Although many gays may have been achievers, to ‘prove themselves worthy’ when still doubting their sexuality, this does not really show in the answers to the question “What is your highest education?”.
Although a higher percentage of gays did not complete a Bachelor’s Degree (22% as opposed to 19%), three times as many gays indicated to have completed education levels beyond PhD (3% against 1%), while also the percentage of PhD’s is somewhat higher among gays (8% against 6%). Overall, the differences are not significant though.
Conclusion: the assumption that LGBT have a higher education is not overall correct. This belongs to the set of myths.
